		TIMEBANKING [TBG]: A BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Report — June 2012

Written by: Volunteering Unit, Office of Communities, NSW Department of Education
and Communities.

B	ORIGIN & VALUES OF TIMEBANKING

B	Where does Timebanking come from and what are its values ?

Timebanking was conceived in 1980 by civil-rights lawyer Edgar S. Cahn and was
further refined in 1987 (TimeBanks USA, 2012).

This work was formalised in the organisation Time Banks USA which offers training and
support in establishing Timebanking around the world.

The core values of Timebanking include:
		1	Assets
		2	Redefining Work
		3	Reciprocity
		4	Social Capital
		5	Respect

1	Assets:

Every human being has something to contribute.

2	Redefining Work:

	Some work is beyond price.

Work must be redefined to include whatever it takes to bring up healthy
children, make neighbourhoods safe and vibrant, and care for the frail
	and vulnerable.

3	Reciprocity:

Helping works better as a two-way street.

The question: How can I help you? needs to change so we ask: How can we
help each other build the world we both will live in?

4	Social Capital:

	We need each other.

	Networks are stronger than individuals.

People helping each other reweave communities of support, strength and
	trust.

Social networks require ongoing investments of social capital generated
by trust, reciprocity and civic engagement.

5	Respect:

	Every human being matters.

Respect underlies freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and everything we value.

Respect supplies the heart and soul of democracy.

We must respect where people are in the moment, not where we hope they will
be at some future point (Rushey Green Time Bank, 2011).
