A INTRODUCTION
The NSW Government has announced a trial of Timebanking in Newcastle and the
Central Coast to commence in August 2012.
Timebanking is a community currency system where members trade volunteer services
(counted as hours of time) with one another.
This is known as person-to-person Timebanking.
The unit of currency is always valued at an hour's worth of any person's labour and is
known as a time dollar in the USA and a time credit in the UK.
Timebanking aims to strengthen communities and build social capital through developing
local relationships of trust and reciprocity (Kimmel, 2011).
A Timebanking broker is employed to manage the scheme (although in some cases
this is conducted by volunteers), maintain a database of participants and to recruit
people and organisations.
Participants describe what they can offer, and what they need help with.
People earn a time credit for each hour spent helping someone else, and spend a credit
when someone helps them in return.
Timebanking is a community development tool and works by facilitating the exchange
of skills and experience within a community.
It aims to build families and communities by valuing and rewarding voluntary work.
Timebanking values everyone’s time as equal, 1 hour equals 1 hour, or 1 credit.
For every hour spent helping someone in your community, the contributor is entitled to
an hour of help in return.
