A	SUMMARY (9)

a	Education is the systematic instruction, schooling or training
given to the young in preparation for the work of life; and by
extension, similar instruction or training obtained in adult age.

b	Education should not be equated with schooling.

c	It is a process that begins before school age and extends beyond
	high school, university, and apprenticeships.

d	Before the start of formal schooling in kindergarten, education
is reflected in pre-school arrangements such as childcare and
	early childhood education.

e	Beyond high school, college or university, and professional
training through apprenticeships, education takes place in
the form of adult learning and lifelong learning.

f	Education is an inherently developmental and intergenerational
	endeavor.

g	It requires learning over time, typically achieved by one generation
(of teachers, parents, professionals, etc.) teaching the next
	(students, children, employees).

h	It is important to pay attention to continuity in the educational
process: the learners of today are the teachers of tomorrow, and
any education gap in one generation will inevitably affect
	following ones.

i	The Education Domain measures eight headline indicators:

The Education Domain indicators were tracked primarily between
	the years 1994-2008.

1	Early Childhood Education and Care
	2	Developmental Health in Kindergarten
3	Student-Educator Ratio in Public Schools
4	Social and Emotional Competence in Middle Childhood
5	Basic Educational Knowledge and Skills of Youth
	6	Socio-economic Gradient
	7	High School Completion
	8	Post-secondaryParticipation and Attainment

R	THE CANADIAN INDEX OF WELLBEING NETWORK

a	Based in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo,
the Canadian Index of Wellbeing Network is an independent, non-partisan group
of national and international leaders, researchers, organizations, and
	grassroots Canadians.

b	Its mission is to report on wellbeing at the national level and promote a
dialogue on how to improve it through evidence-based policies that are
responsive to the needs and values of Canadians.

c	The Network’s signature product is the Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW).

d	The CIW measures Canada’s wellbeing and tracks progress in eight interconnected
	categories.

e	It allows us, as Canadians, to see if we are better off or worse off than we
used to be - and why.

f	It helps identify what we need to change to achieve a better outcome and to
leave the world a better place for the generations that follow.
