Challenge - REPORT IWC EDSP MEETING THU 17 OCT 2019 - 14:00 - 15:30
Hi everyone - here is a draft report on the Inner West Council [IWC] draft Economic
Development Strategic Plan [EDSP] - home business consultation on Thu 17 Oct
This Agenda for the Consultation can be reviewed On-line hereDRAFT SUMARY REPORT
The Inner West Council organised 8 consultation meetings to review its draft Economic
Development Strategic Plan [EDSP] 2020-2023 for Public Consultation and input about
the draft EDSP by Sun 27 Oct 2019
The 8 events were co-ordinated by the IWC Economic Development Team of
Bernadette, Duncan, John and Billy
The EDSP Consultations are part of a Public "Help Plan the Future" Consultation process which includes
A Our Place Inner West - Local Strategic Planning Statement
B Employment and Retail Lands Strategy
C Economic Development Strategic Plan [EDSP]
D Climate and Renewables Strategy
This EDSP "Home Business" Consultation had 4 attendees including myself where I
was representing the Open Interchange Consortium [OIC] which has SMEs and many
Home Based members
1 Making the Inner West a hub for economic and employment growth
Two of the other attendees could have been SMEs rather than home business
enterprises with one of them Michael having 4 web-sites which were not generating too
much business for him
This was an issue that I supported as many small businesses generate very little profit
through their web-sites as the cost to achieve a high level in search engines can be very
expensive
Indeed it was well-known that a number of volunteer sporting clubs and small
businesses suffered the problem that their web-sites were not updated regularly and
hence received little or low contact results
This could be an opportunity for crating jobs with On-line update creativity being linked
to increased traffic, turnover and profit from the web-site
This is "On-line update creativity" issue could be supported by Council to local business
precincts
I explained how the Petersham Park Waste Collective [PPWC]" had formed as a group
od dog owners very interested in better Park Waste management process including dog
poo
PPWC had identified that with more appropriate different coloured bins around the park
and a 12-month Local education/awareness program there would be far better waste
management practices around the park
PPWC had also noticed at a meeting at the Petersham Bowling club that a large
number of 18-30 year olds were very aware and interested in Waste Management and
Sustainability issues
A number of articles on better hard plastic and soft plastic waste management issues
had been circulated and these articles appeared to provide great potential for Home
based business and SMEs
2 Embracing the Innovation Economy
I said a key issue for the Innovation Economy was providing Information On-line rather
than as PDF files to be downloaded
The Inner West Council provided its Council Agendas and Minutes as On-line HTML
papers as well as PDF files
An example of this is the Meeting process of the PPWC with the Agenda one week
before a meeting, the draft minutes and the Notice of Minutes with subsequent reports
If documents are provided On-line, than local business can sponsor web-pages and the
Council could receive a royalty based on the hits and new business generated by the
Council web-page
In addition Volunteers has great value to the Community and Volunteers could earn
local community Credits and though be accepted by local stores
If the Inner West Council can support a Volunteer eCredits system similar to other
Councils in the UK then local businesses and shops will embrace the Innovation
Economy
