Hi Helen  - the Petersham Park Waste Collective [PPWC] has always been about including dog poo 
as part of effective Park Waste Management

Please find below extracts from the Sponsors' Report that will be handed out at the meeting that 
you may wish to forward to the Parks people invited for their comment at the meeting

PETERSHAM PARK WASTE COLLECTIVE 

 
This report has been prepared as there are a number of Civic Governance issues that
have to be addressed if the IWC is to achieve the expected outcomes of the "Community
Partnerships and Support" for "Zero Waste and a thriving share economy",
 
It has been prepared for the Petersham Park Waste Collective [PPWC] for a meeting on
Thu 14 Nov 2019 to discuss how a Community Group can work with Council as outlined in
the "Key Area 4: Community Partnerships and Support" of the 23 Sep 2019 draft "Climate
 + Renewables Strategy [CRS]"

B      CHILD HEALTH AND GROUNDWATER TABLE PROTECTION
 
Part of this sponsorship includes research into why dog waste should be included in
Organic Waste Management for child health protection and groundwater table
contamination minimisation
 
There has been a large increase in the dog population over the past 3 years using
Petersham Park as new rate-payers move in as new units are being built
 
There is a large dog off-lease area adjacent to the Fanny Durak Aquatic Centre in
Petersham Park with a chldren's playground across from the Swimming Pool
 
Many dog owners meet near the children's playground and the single red bin on the main
footpath through the Park is most heavily used by the dog walkers and often overflows
with poo bags falling onto the footpath eg 11:00 am Sun 10 Nov 2019
 
When the Council did install an extra red bin on Tue 27 Aug 2019, the notice on what
could be thrown in the red bin was "highly questionable"  - meat trays, nappies, food
waste, plastic wrap, plastic bags and polystyrene !
 
This research includes the impact dog poo also has on the ground water table
 
"Pets and urban wildlife are major sources of water contamination because pet waste contains
harmful bacteria and parasites. 

Dog faeces can contain faecal coliform bacteria, which can spread diseases like Giardia, 
Salmonella, and Campylobacter, causing serious illness in humans."
 
Other examples about the impact of dog-poo on water include "Keep It Clean Partnership"
 
C      OTHER COUNCILS INCLUDE DOG-POO AS PART OF ORGANICS
 
In 2012 City of Yarra sponsored "Closing the Poop Loop - P 10" which identified that
"Local Government plays the central role in Litter and Waste Management"
 
According to a Press Release about the grant in 2012 the City of Yarra (human population
in 2007 was 73,501) had 6,078 dogs producing 750 Tons of dog-poo each year with 150
tons (1/5) deposited in urban parks
 
"If all of this was diverted into a local anaerobic digester, an estimated 3,800 litres of
Biogas could be produced for heating lighting and electricity"
 
That report confirmed that Dog Poo (aka "Pet Droppings", "Pet Excrement") is classified
as a biodegradable waste and not a bio-solid or clinical waste product
 
This has also been confirmed by the Penrith Council which includes Pet Droppings as part
of Organic Waste (inside council provided green compostable bags, wrapped in paper or
loose)

intention (parks, companion animals) - I can touch on IWC organics and provide an update 
from council. 

The agenda below is very broad and I'm concerned that if it's just asking questions about 
everything council is doing regarding resource recovery we won't get to hear about your 
dog poo project. 

Let's stick to the original intention and the other items (recycling/comms) can be addressed 
via email easily.
