BACKGROUND:

On Tue 13 Aug 2019 an article appeared in the InnerWest Courier
"MarketPlace Leichhardt goes Green"

On Fri 16 Aug 2019 SGG arranged a meeting with JoA for Fri 23 Aug 2019 to
understand the Sustainability initiatives implemented at MarketPlace

A number of other contacts were invited to the meeting

OBJECTIVES:

1	To understand the Sustainability issues addressed at MarketPlace

2	To see if MarketPlace could accept Dog Poo for recycling as Dog
waste had been used in other "Biogas Waste-to-Energy [W2E]" systems

3	To raise awareness of ways of dealing with Sustainability topics

QUESTIONS SUBMITTED BY SAN MEMBERS

A	How do you deal with plastic waste
B	How do you deal with cardboard casing materials
C	How many solar panels are installed
D	How many are planned
E	How much electricity do they produce
F	How much waste does the organic pulp machine consume a month
G	How much methane does that produce
H	How much fertiliser does that produce
I	How does the organic pulp machine operate
J	As you are using weighing scales could we do a trial using waste from
	Petersham Park including dog poo
K	Could we do a trial to see what the impact is of biodegradable bags on
	the outputs
L	could we do it as a research project about managing dog-waste more
effectively with Sydney university or one of the local TAFEs

MARKETPLACE LEICHHARDT 2040

In 1975 the McNamara Group originally developed the Centre as Leichhardt
Market Town

Local Government Super purchased the Centre in the early 1990s and
rebranded it Leichhardt Market Place

MarketPlace Leichhardt is a sub-regional shopping centre which is still owned
by the Local Government Superannuation Scheme and is managed by Jones
Lang Lasalle [JLL] Australia

JLL Australia manages 300 shopping centres in Australia

MarketPlace Leichhardt has around 130 retail properties for lease with
currently 71 Tenants and 788 Car Parking Places

Major tenants include Woolworth, Aldi, Target, Commonwealth Bank, Lowes,

Both Woolworth and Aldi manage their own waste issues

DRAFT REPORT ON SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES AT MARKETPLACE

A	Organic Waste - Pulp Master for outsourced Biogas Digester
B	Plastic Waste
C	Solar Panels
D	Bottle and Can Recycling for 10c
E	Cardboard and Paper disposal
F	Clothing bin for old clothes
G	Recycling cooking oil
H	Water harvesting and usage
I	Car Pooling

A	ORGANIC PULP MASTER

JoA said he had reviewed what was happening with waste management and
recycling elsewhere in the world including:

Korea had a 95% recycling record in 2018 up from 5% in 1999

Singapore has built an island (Semakau Island) out of plastic waste which
now housed the non-recyclable waste incinerator

Since JoA has been involved at MarketPlace Leichhardt he has been involved
with the installation of the JJ Richards Organic Pulp machine - "Pulpmaster"
which converts organic waste into a liquid which is stored in a connected
2,000 litre Tank

The next size tank is 4,000 litres then 10,000 litres

Barangaroo uses a 10,000 litre tank

Each tenant is issued with a Smart Waste Access Card which measures the
amount of waste that is placed in the Pulpmaster

The tenants and cleaners bring their plastic bags to empty into the
Pulpmaster system

If tenants bring unused rice or coffee grouts then they have to use water with
the Pulpmaster otherwise the unused rice and coffee grouts become solid

JLL then charges each tenant 29c per kilo of waste placed in the Pulpmaster

There is a list of PROHIBITED items that they cannot place in the Organic
Pump system which have to be placed in other bins.

These include

A	Raw Meat skins L	Real or Artificial flowers
B	Rubber Gloves or Plastic Film	M	Hair nets
C	Pineapple tops N	Bamboo
D	Oyster shells O	Large bones
E	Metal P	Margarine and butter
F	Plastic Q	Hot liquids
G	Corn husks R	Frozen products
H	Crockery & Cutlery S	Large quantities of uncooked
I	Glass bread/pasta dough
J	Nappies T	Large seeds eg Avocado
K	Dish cloths U	Corrosive Materials

The MarketPlace tank is emptied once a month and the organic liquid is
transported to Sutherland shire where it is converted into methane gas and
fertilisers

In 2 months over 10-tons of Organic Waste instead of going to landfill has
produced over 86 Million Kilojoules of methane which is enough energy for 36
homes for 1 week

JoA said this amount of waste would have filled 1,680 plastic bags

57% of the waste of MarketPlace was food waste

B	PLASTIC WASTE

There was little discussion about how various plastic waste (eg glad-wrap
to plastic milk containers) would be handled - to be followed up

C	SOLAR PANELS

As at Fri 23 Aug 2019 there were 980 Solar Panels (3 rows of 260 Solar
Panels and 1 row of 200 Solar Panels) installed

There are immediate plans to have another 450 Solar Panels installed over
the next month giving a total of 1,430 Solar Panels

MarketPlace has installed an Embedded Energy Network so that it is self
sufficient and electricity costs for tenants are far lower than on the electricity
from the National Grid

The installed Solar Panel network has a 25-yr payback

All the lights in MarketPlace have been replaced by LED lights

LED lights are super energy efficient, using approximately 85% less energy
than halogen or incandescent lights - thus significant savings on power bills.

LED lights also have a much longer lifespan than other types of lighting

D	BOTTLE AND CAN DISPOSAL

MarketPlace installed a Tomra Reverse Vending System last week for glass bottles
and cartons, plastic containers and cans that have a 10c recycle bounty

The recycled containers are collected each week by Cleanaway

At this stage there are no statistics on the amount of bottles and cans
collected at MarketPlace each week

E	CARDBOARD AND PAPER DISPOSAL

MarketPlace has installed a Clean Cardboard Compactor

There was no discussion about how dirty cardboard was handled

F	CLOTHING BIN FOR OLD CLOTHES

There are 10 Clothing Bins to recycle clothes at MarketPlace with 6 owned by
YouthSafe on the roof car-park and 4 owned by MS Australia on the ground floor
car-park

G	RECYCLING COOKING OIL

JLL has installed a recycling Cooking Oil machine

A recycling Cooking Oil machine costs between $ 300 - $ 5,000

There was no discussion about usage figures

H	WATER HARVESTING AND USAGE

JoA said at this stage there had been so little rain over the last 3 months that
water harvesting and water usage had not been considered

I	CAR POOLING

JoA said there were 3 Go-Get car spaces but that was managed by the
NewsAgency who use Smove which uses the Opal Card as a swipe card
