PTE Description Details:
CHARITIES REGISTER
A Charities Bill providing for the creation of a registration, reporting and monitoring system 
for charitable entities and approved donees is being considered by Parliament. 
The Bill contains provisions to establish a Charities Commission that would be centrally 
involved in administering the registration system. 
The development of the associated registers is subject to Parliament voting the Bill into law.
The Government has timetabled the Bill for enactment in the 2004 calendar year. 
This timeframe will be more definite once the Parliamentary Social Services Select Committee
reports on the Charities Bill in October this year. 
Based on this timeframe the registration of charities and approved donees would start in the 
second half of next year.
The Charities Commission Preparatory Unit (CCPU) has been tasked with supporting the 
establishment of the Commission. 
A Charities registry system is required to underpin this initiative.
