BLOOD OF SLAVES IN THE BLUESTONE OF SA

Section: OpEd Edition: Advertiser

The founding and funding of South Australia has been literally whitewashed

George Fife ANGAS the principal philanthropist, investor and visionary of the SA
colonial experiment was only able to fund his South Australian Company because
of the money made from slavery

The Montefiore, Mills and Stirling families and many other prominent colonialists
were slavers

Money made from the persecution of their black slaves on the sugar and mahogany
plantations of Jamaica and Honduras helped create SA

It's ironic that our free state settler state was funded by slavery

We have always felt so superior to the convict states since convicts were slave
labour

We're founded on slaves so are we holier than whom ?

All this is revealed by Australia's most underrated and oft-plagiarised historian,
Humphrey MCQUEEN, in a recent essay published by our excellent Wakefield Press
in the book "Foundational Fictions in SA History"

We think of the British because of their Christian piety (despite the Bible
supporting slavery) brought to the celebrated abolition of slavery throughout their
empire in 1833 although the abolition didn't include India, Ceylon and St Helena

What is forgotten - but MCQUEEN reminds us - is that the British slavers,
including ANGAS, were hugely compensated for their lost income from what they
owned

Slaves !

British Lawyers Moses MONTEFIORE and Nathan ROTHSCHILD secured BPS 20 Million
from the British Government for the slavers, including MONTEFIORE's own family
bound for SA

The BPS 20 Million in 1835 would equal BPS 16.5 Billion today

The debt the British Government secured to pay the slavers was not settled
until 2015

Britain was the largest slave-owning nation and compensation to the slavers was
vast

Fortunes were given to ANGAS, the MONTEFIORES, Samuel MILLS, Edward STIRLING -
all SA colonialist - and many other Britons who didn't use their ill-gotten gains
to fund SA, such as the Bishop of Exeter and the family of the late Adelaide
Festival director Lord HAREWOOD, cousin to the Queen

I prefer McQUEEN in all this

SA was founded on the blood of Caribbean slaves

Meanwhile, back on the veldt, Britain Cecil RHODES made one of the greatest
fortunes in history from slavery in Africa

Oriel College Oxford, won't remove its statue of RHODES for fear of losing
BPS 100 Million in gifts

Money trumps morality

Slavery has never ended

Australians continued to blackbird South Seas islanders until the 1970s and the
human traffic of slaves continues apace

All nations are built on an act of forgetting

Ours is of piecemeal genocide, denial and neglect of Aboriginal peoples and this
issue is nowhere near resolution

African slavery is the American forgetting

ANGAS and others were not just bound for SA they were bound to slavery

That they used money from slavery for good doesn't make it right

They laundered that money in SA

The good ANGAS and others did for SA was of no help to the slaves they
oppressed in the Caribbean

Slaves and their families were not compensated, only the slavers and their
families

None of us will ever stand absolute scrutiny

Every family has skeletons in its closet

Every saint has a past and every sinner - a future

Hover, as McQUEEN attests, there's blood in the bluestone of SA as they used
the money made from slavery for good
