Current Internet situation in Mayukwayukwa
Hi, The ICT page shows satellites dishes, but how close are these to populated area,?
i.e, are there many people around using one satellite dish ?
Also, are these available to get a (somewhat) stable internet connection?
#2 Mon, 04/04/2016 - 15:18 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi Jesse,
We are just following up details around the satellite dishes and will post back here
shortly.
Internet in Mayukwayukwa is limited to the administration and field offices, it is not
available on a household level.
Kind Regards Alison

Does the high school have internet coverage?
#4 Tue, 09/20/2016 - 11:02 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi Brandon,
Apologies for the delayed response - there was no internet connection at the secondary
school previously and we have been unable to determine whether there are plans or
resources in place to create one.
Kind Regards Alison

Hi Brandon,
Justin, a field professional in Zambia, as also confirmed that there is definitely
interest in connecting the secondary school to internet, however this will be reliant
on funds and feasibility.
All the best Alison

F 8) NUMBER AND TYPE OF PHONES BEING USED - 1 Reply#1 Fri, 06/03/2016 - 12:17 David Stewart
Number and type of phones being used
Do a lot of residents have their own mobile phones?
Do these have wi-fi capabilities. More specifically, are smart phones used in the area?
#2 Tue, 06/07/2016 - 14:39 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi David,
There is generally one mobile phone per household in the camp (the majority of households
will have access to a mobile phone).
However these mobiles are usually only sms-capable, they are not smartphones.
Kind Regards, Alison

ICT in School - Class Sizes
Hello, I am trying to find information on the size of the schools in Mayukwayukwa.
How many students are in the average class, and how many classes are there in each school? Thanks Sam
#2 Thu, 05/19/2016 - 14:44 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi Sam,
We are just following up a bit more information around the class size of most schools
in Mayukwayukwa.
In the meantime, there is a bit of information around schools and ICT posted on this
forum and you may also explore the website of the Zambian Ministry of Education.
Kind Regards Alison

Hi Sam,
Please find the response from Justin, a field professional in Mayukwayukwa, below:
Hello Sam, There are 2 primary schools one of which has 7 classrooms while the other
has 5 classrooms.
On average there are slightly over 50 pupils per class.
The camp also houses 2 community schools, with 1 secondary school.
Each community school has on average 2 classrooms only with pupils over 40 on average
in each class while the secondary school is in its early years of operation with 12
classrooms and has 3 science labs and 2 home economics lab.
On average there are more than 50 pupils per class for those in use.
I hope this clarifies to your needs in the request.
Please do not hesitate to find out further in case of gaps in the information.
Thank you

F 6) INFORMATION ON EXISTING COMMS INFRASTRUCTURE - 2 Replies#1 Tue, 04/12/2016 - 19:35 Rhys Kissell
Information on the existing communications infrastructure
Hi Alison! I was hoping to get some information about the phone tower that currently
exists in the camp.
How tall is it?
What equipment is on the tower?
How is it powered, and how much power does it receive? etc.
I was doing some research on what languages are mostly commonly spoken in Zambia and
Angola, but I figured that this might not actually be representative of the language
groups in the camp - of the 17 that are spoken in the camp, are there are a few that
are very commonly spoken?
I'm trying to figure out some logistics of setting up a community radio station. Thanks!

Hi Rhys,
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you - we are just looking into this and will
post back here shortly!
Kind Regards Alison
#3 Thu, 05/19/2016 - 10:48 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi Rhys,
Please find a response to your query below:
Generally, the tower is estimated to be 25m to 30m.
It is made of steel metal and a few fibres for connectivity.
It has been propelled by diesel generator which used to consume about 20litres every
24hours (or 20litres/day).
However, there are developmental changes that have taken place such that fuel is
no-longer being used to propel the tower for the past one month because they have
now connected solar panels.
The exact voltage supplied is not known exactly but this can be followed up.
As for the common language spoken, it would be interesting to take a look at the
response here:

Hi, I was wanting to know the location of the Airtel tower.
Is it possible to get its location added to the Google Earth .kml file or to get the
coordinates. Thanks.

Hi Michael,
Apologies for the delay getting back to you.
The map I have recommended to Joshua here:
http://www.ewbchallenge.org/unhcr-zambia/forum/resettlement-area
also shows the approximate location of the airtel tower.

Resettlement Area
Hi, I was wondering if you guys would be able to tell me what the greatest distance is
from the refugee settlement to the resettlement area.
I am the community radio and want to know the range it requires if set up at the refugee
camp to ensure coverage throughout the resettlement area once complete? Thanks
#2 Tue, 04/26/2016 - 12:08 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi Joshua,
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, hope your project is going well so far.
If you go to the 'Solutions Alliance - Zambia National Group' website:
http://www.endingdisplacement.org/thematic-groups/zambia-national-group/
you can download a document called the 'Strategic Framework for the Local Integration of
Former Refugees in Zambia'.
There is a map on the last page of this document which you should find helpful.

F 3) ICT COMPUTERS IN SCHOOLS LIMITED ELECTRICITY & MONEY 1 Reply#1 Tue, 04/12/2016 - 21:33 Blair Firth
ICT Computers in schools with limited electricity and money
Hi Alison, when looking into solutions for this problem the thought of a more renewable
energy source such as solar was considered due to the financial constraints as well as
availability to find panels my team weren't sure if this was a viable option.
Basically where would we stand pitching this as a concept?
Would the value outweigh the cost?
#2 Thu, 04/21/2016 - 13:58 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi Blair,
It sounds like your group has started some great thinking around the viability of
different types of renewable energy.
It may be helpful at this point to put together an evaluation criteria that will help
you decide which energy source will meet the requirements of your project.
Creating an evaluation criteria can help you analyse the different renewable energy
options you are considering across one standard so that you choose the one that is most
appropriate overall.
For example, perhaps solar panels are more expensive upfront than other energy sources
you are looking at, but they are actually the best option overall because they have
performed better against the other criteria that are important to your project.
It will be up to your team to show that the benefit of the energy source you recommend
is worth the cost (in terms of money, transport, labour, maintenance, etc).
One attribute of solar panels I might point out to get you started is that they are
already used in quite a few locations around Mayukwayukwa, so they are a generally well
understood and accepted technology.
Good luck Alison

F 2) SCOPE OF WI-FI DESIGN & CURRENT SITUATION - 1 reply#1 Wed, 04/06/2016 - 13:48 David Stewart
Scope of wi-fi design & current situation
For the wi-fi project, are you intending us only to investigate how to best set up and
configure a wireless network that uses a pre-existing internet connection?
Or are we also investigating aspects regarding the internet connection as well e.g. data
plan to use?
Additionally, how is the settlement currently connected to the internet?
Is it through the satellite dishes?
Are the dishes privately owned or are they property of the Government i.e. could the
dishes be used to provide the wireless network with the internet connection?
#2 Tue, 04/12/2016 - 11:24 Alison Stoakley (EWB Australia)
Hi David,
When the design brief talks about the existing mobile phone coverage, this is only
referring to phone calls and sms - there is no existing internet connection available
to residents in Mayukwayukwa apart from the offices or via dongles.
Apologies for that confusion, but I believe that may help clarify this project!
While the final scoping of your design project will be up to you and your team, what we
would love to see are ideas around what this space might look like and how it might
function.
You could think about what would the physical space look like, where might be the most
appropriate location, who would use it/manage it/maintain it, what kind of cost would
be involved, what kind of challenges it may face - or many other things!
Apologies for the delay in getting back you and I hope that information helps,
Alison
