PROPOSED AUSTRALIAN ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES TSUNAMI RELIEF INITIATIVE

This e-mail is to inquire if S:E:A members would be interested in working with other Australian Information Technology Associations to provide long term relief for the countries affected by the Tsunami. It has been proposed that the major Australian Information Technology Associations may form a combined Alliance possibly called the Australian Electronic Industries Tsunami Relief Alliance [AEITRA] If S:E:A is prepared to support this proposed Tsunami Relief initiative we would appreciate a Support in Principal confirmation by 17:00 Fri 28 Jan 2004 B>A UN/CEFACT SPEAKER FOR PROPOSED LUNCH/DINNER We have been fortunate to receive confirmation from Duane NICKULL Vice Chair United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business [UN/CEFACT] that he is prepared to speak about what UN/CEFACT are doing in the Asia-Pacific Region at a Tsunami Relief Lunch/Dinner during the 1st week in April. The invitation to speak included these initial issues: 1 Your presentation outlines the work that UN/CEFACT are carrying out in the Asia Pacific region to raise awareness of UN/CEFACT and XML 2 All the Australian computer industry is invited to the event. 3 Companies are invited to sponsor a table and provide something for auction 4 The registration is electronic and can be viewed as an open web-site 5 the bidding is electronic on the night and can be open for review of bidders and payment 6 the proceeds from the event will all be channelled through to the end- survivors electronically via an XML pathway 7 There is a historical review dinner in 2006 to view the success of the efforts by the Australian computer industry for the Tsunami Relief Further background to this proposed Tsunami Relief Initiative can be reviewed on http://www.oic.org/z/CZAG B LONG-TERM SUPPORT FOR DEVASTATED AREAS It is envisaged that the medium to long term support for the devastated areas would include: 1 assisting the development of an electronic infrastructure for the devastated communities 2 inviting Australian Universities and schools to provide ideas eg build community halls with a gymnasium with the equipment linked to a generator so that electricity is generated will people are keeping fit 3 providing technology and training to provide broader work and leisure skills to the re-developing communities NEXT STEPS As UN/CEFACT has agreed to support this initiative by speaking at the proposed lunch/dinner in the 1st week in April we would appreciate an indication by Fri 28 Jan 2005 if S:E:A is prepared to support this initiative An indication of support could include the nomination of an appropriate person to represent the S:E:A on the proposed Australian Electronic Industries Tsunami Relief Alliance Management Committee.
