Title: The What, Why, and How of XML

Abstract: An introduction to XML for technical users. Questions which

will be answered are:

• What is XML?
• Why use XML?
• How do you get into XML?
• Where XML fits with HTML & SGML
• How it complements Java, OO and other languages
• How it can be used with E-commerce

About the speaker:

Anthony Coates is a Software Engineer working forEquity Systems, a Sydney-based subsidiary of Reuters.

He is currentlydeveloping a product that uses both Java and XML. Previously, he hasworked as a multimedia Web developer, and was a physicist before that.

His interest in Literate Programming (documents containing code and

commentary in a genuinely human-readable form) led him into SGML in

1996.

In 1998, he was asked to prepare a presentation for the XMLDevelopers Day at the WWW7 conference in Brisbane; since that time, he has used XML as his preferred document and information format.

The slides for this talk are written in XML, and the XML source and HTML

translation scripts will be available.
